Japanese vs English One Piece booster box prices: what six months of data shows

We tracked weekly market prices from January through mid-July 2026 — 21 Japanese sets and 17 English sets with continuous price history. In the matched sample, the English-to-Japanese price ratio ranged from 1.3x to 7.4x, Japanese boxes rose more on average over the window, and the two newest releases declined. These are observations from the stated period, not forecasts.
Finding 1: English premium and set age moved together in this sample
As of July 14, 2026, every English booster box we track costs more than its Japanese counterpart — but the size of the gap is not random. The newest set, OP-16 The Time of Battle, trades at just 1.3x its Japanese version ($188 vs about $150). Move back one set at a time and the multiple climbs: OP-14 sits near 2.8x, OP-13 at 3.8x, OP-11 at 4.5x, OP-09 at 6.0x, and the oldest premium products — EB-01 Memorial Collection (7.4x) and OP-05 Awakening of the New Era (7.3x) — cost more than seven times their Japanese equivalents.
The data establishes the price ratio and release age, not the cause. Bandai does not publish complete print-run totals by language, and buyer location, release timing, reprints and marketplace coverage can all affect the gap. Treat the age relationship as a correlation to monitor rather than a print-volume conclusion.
Finding 2: Japanese boxes rose more over six months
Averaged across the sets we track, Japanese boxes appreciated more than English boxes between early January and mid-July 2026. The strongest Japanese movers were PRB-01 Premium Booster (+113%, $68 to $145), OP-01 Romance Dawn (+109%, $150 to $313), OP-08 Two Legends (+81%), and EB-02 Anime 25th and OP-11 A Fist of Divine Speed (both +71%). On the English side the leaders were OP-11 (+62%), OP-02 Paramount War (+53%), and OP-10 Royal Blood (+50%) — solid, but a step behind.

Japanese January and July prices are weekly ungraded market values, rounded to whole dollars; six-month change computed from the same series. English July prices likewise, except rows marked † which reference recent eBay listing bands because no continuous English market series exists for that set. As of 2026-07-14.
Finding 3: the two newest tracked releases declined
English OP-16 fell 53% from its April pre-release level ($400 to $188), OP-15 declined 16%, and Japanese OP-16 declined 32% over the measured window. The sample contains too few comparable 2026 launches to declare a universal bottoming pattern. It does show that pre-release prices can differ sharply from prices after wider distribution.
Case study: OP-13 Carrying on His Will
The Japanese OP-13 box started January near $78 and reached about $131 by mid-July (+68%). The move coincided with high tracked prices for its manga-art chase cards, but this dataset does not isolate causation. The English box moved from $430 to roughly $494 (+15%) over the same stretch, with a spike near $670 in early February that retraced. Japanese rose more in percentage terms during this window; English started and ended at the higher absolute price. You can see both series on our OP-13 tracker page.
What this means if you are buying
- Entry timing: compare pre-release and post-release prices; OP-16 shows that the difference can be large.
- Holding sealed: Japanese boxes rose more in percentage terms in this six-month window, but one period does not establish future returns.
- Choosing a language: use the current ratio as a description, then check reprint information and completed-sale depth for the exact set.
- Selling: calculate shipping, taxes, fees and the completed-sale count in the marketplace you can actually use.
Methodology and limits
Price series are weekly ungraded market values for sealed booster boxes, January 7 to July 14, 2026, converted to US dollars. Japanese chase-card prices are Yuyu-tei retail NM listings, variant-matched by hand. eBay references are active listing bands with China-region sellers excluded. Two honest caveats: first, market values are estimates built from sales and listings, not a guarantee any single box trades at that number; second, sets marked † lack a continuous English series, so we cite listing bands instead and treat their ratios as approximate. We publish what we can verify and leave blank what we cannot — the same rule we apply across the whole site (see how our market data is built).

Why are English One Piece boxes so much more expensive than Japanese ones?
Our sample shows higher English prices and wider ratios on several older sets, but it does not isolate a single cause. Release timing, buyer market, reprints, marketplace coverage and unpublished print volume may all contribute.
Are Japanese boxes a better investment?
They appreciated more in percentage terms over this six-month window. That does not establish future performance or liquidity. Neither language is automatically better; compare the exact set and marketplace.
