Japanese boxes have lower tracked prices for every matched set in the September 2026 sample below. Liquidity and supply must be checked set by set because public print-run totals are unavailable and marketplace depth differs by region.

Median sold price per sealed box from completed eBay sales, as of September 29, 2026 (18 of the 22 set pairs we track — both editions sold in the last 28 days; every pair is on the compare page). EN premium = how much more the English box costs than the Japanese box of the same set.
Observed pattern: the English premium is smaller for newer sets in this snapshot — across the 15 OP sets it ranges from +144% on OP-16 to +502% on OP-05. Release gaps have also narrowed: OP-16 launched in English 13 days after Japan, and OP-17 launched six days later. The table shows correlation by set age; it does not isolate print volume or predict the premium on future sets.
Japanese boxes can be stronger when
- The set has Japan-first collector demand.
- Supply is tightening and reprint risk looks lower.
- Collectors prefer original-language cards or Japanese-exclusive designs.
English boxes can be stronger when
- US and European sold comps are deep and stable.
- Player demand and collector demand overlap.
- Long-term resale liquidity matters more than low entry price.
Price and supply: why the two markets move differently
Japanese editions usually release first, although the gap has narrowed on recent sets. Bandai does not publish complete print-run totals by language, so price gaps should not be presented as direct print-volume measurements. Compare the release calendar, announced reprints and matched listings separately.
In this sample, Japanese boxes cost less to enter. Whether an English box is easier to resell depends on its recent completed-sale count, spread and the seller's target market; the language label alone does not establish liquidity.
Liquidity: how fast can you sell it back
Use recent completed-sale count, listing depth, bid activity and spread to compare liquidity for the exact set and language. Cross-border shipping, taxes and customs can reduce the net result. OP Box Index does not infer sale speed from language alone.
Chase cards and grading demand
Chase-card prices and PSA populations add context, but they do not calculate opening expected value or prove how many sealed boxes remain. Compare the top-card distribution and grading data separately for each language; the same artwork can have different prices and submission populations.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. Compare entry price, completed-sale count, spread, shipping cost, reprint information and buyer market for the exact set. OP Box Index focuses on Japanese sealed boxes and Japanese chase cards, with English data shown as a separate comparison.
